Cambodian Woman Rescued After Forced Marriage to Chinese Man

Phnom Penh: A Cambodian woman, allegedly duped by a broker promising work in China, endured six months of captivity after being coerced into marrying a Chinese man. Fortunately, Chinese authorities intervened, securing her release.

Touch Sokhak, Deputy Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, confirmed to EAC News that the woman, now safe, received assistance from Chinese authorities through collaboration between the Cambodian Ministry of Interior and the Cambodian Consulate and Cambodia Embassy in China. Efforts are underway to repatriate her.

"Late on March 10, 2024, Chinese authorities rescued the woman from her confinement and are cooperating with the Cambodian Embassy and Consulate General in China for further investigation and repatriation," Sokhak stated.

The rescue followed a distressing post on Lina's Facebook account on March 9, 2024, revealing the plight of the victim, identified as Phipha from Khsach Pracheh Krom village, Tbong Khmum province. Sold by a recruiter and forced into marriage, Phipha endured confinement for six months.

The victim's biological sister recounted her sudden disappearance in early 2023 after working in a Phnom Penh factory, prompting concerns from the family. They only learned of her ordeal after the Facebook post surfaced, leading them to seek official assistance.

This incident underscores the prevalence of human trafficking and the need for collaborative efforts to combat such exploitation.
